Ariel and Perla helped Karina fix up the messy foyer for the better part of the evening, and Ariel stewed on the map and what it could mean.

“Help me with this end, would you?” Ariel lifted the end of a stubborn piece of furniture. She looked for Perla but didn’t see her. “Perla?” Still no sign of her. But Ariel did spot two beady eyes peeking at her from behind a fallen tarp. “What the—” She swam over and ripped the tarp away, which revealed a passage big enough for a ship to pass through. And hovering there in the center of it was a creature the size of a small whale.

His sloped back had two dorsal fins, and gills lined his belly. Long whiskers for helping sense the direction in the dark Saithe waters spread in every direction from his nose, and a giant blowhole was in the center of his head. Was he a Sea Monster? The sheer size of him twisted Ariel’s insides, but she grabbed the sharpest thing she could find. Thanks to the broken furniture, there was no shortage of such.

“Who are you?” she demanded. “How did you get in here?”

“Tolum! You’re okay!” Karina swam past Ariel toward the whale and threw her arms around his nose. Ariel bit her lip. Had she made a mistake again? Perla swam back in the room and yelped at the sight of Tolum.

“Tolum is Resident here,” Karina said.

“Oh, my goodness. My apologies!” Ariel wanted to shrink on the spot. She quickly dropped her weapon, a blush spreading across her cheeks.

His head rose in pride before turning to Karina. “Yes, I’m okay, Princess. Sorry I haven’t been by on my usual rounds. The sea has been a whirlwind of discontent with all the rumors about the king. Trying to keep the peace.”

Perla’s brow cinched in confusion at Ariel. Rumors? How far-reaching are these whispers about Father? Have they reached Saithe? Is it spreading?

“What’s happened here? Are you okay?” Tolum’s gaze creased with concern as he gazed around at the foyer. Karina filled him in on the break-in, and Ariel watched as the Sea Monster doted on her sister, offering condolences and having her recount everything that had happened. Ariel hadn’t expected him and Karina to have such amicable dealings. After all, he was a suspect. Was Perla like that with her Resident? Was that typical? Father had painted them so…differently.

How had Father described the Mer–Monster Treaty? A necessary precaution to keep the most vile far away, or something like that. Nothing about Tolum was vile, and that was obvious. Silius either! Father would have said it was because they were Residents. Among the few “good ones,” like Usengu. Ariel wasn’t sure she bought it.

“Absolutely outrageous!” Tolum shouted once Karina was done with her story. He swam in a circle, taking note of all the damage. “We will get to the bottom of this, Princess.”

“Any idea who could be behind it?” Ariel asked.

“I don’t have any leads off the top of my head.
